Holocaust and Genocide Welcome FormThis is a Social Studies elective course intended for juniors and seniors. This course begins with a study of World War I and an in-depth look at the Treaty of Versailles which set the conditions in Europe that allowed for the rise of totalitarian regimes. Next, students will study the events and people involved in the Holocaust. Through primary source analysis, survivors’ accounts, and interviews, students have the opportunity to learn about the lives of millions of people who were targeted by the Nazis during World War II. Students will also learn about the people who resisted the Nazi regime, including those who formed partisan groups and those who risked their lives to save others. To conclude the course, students will learn about other genocides that have taken place throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will finish this course with a thorough understanding of historical events as well as a deepened empathy for those affected by genocide. Students will have the opportunity to consider how they fit into the global community and how they might have the ability to affect change in regards to genocide prevention.
